Roll-of-the-dice poetry

Students roll the dice to determine how many lines of poetry they must write. Then they roll again for each line of poetry. Additional rolls determine how many words in each line.

Scrabble Battle!

This game is a favorite with the students. I show images on the screen. The students must spell words associated with the images. Scrabble rules apply.
Vocabulary review game

As students read essays and short stories, they keep track of unfamiliar words. They create task cards for these words and definitions. We gather all the task cards and share them. This game has similar rules to Scattergories and Charades.

Caesar One-Pagers

After reading Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, students complete a one-pager. This involves adding words, images, and wordart to a single page. They must indicate their favorite quote, an impactful scene, a connection to the world today, and much more.

Poetry With Friends

Many students are intimidated by poetry. So to reduce their fear, I have them work in groups to create a poem from a given list of words. This is also a great vocabulary activity because the list includes many words that they may not have encountered before. Once their rough draft is complete, they cut and paste their poem (ransom-note style) onto card stock.
